A note to donors from our partner hospital

An update from a doctor at our partner hospital in India, April 24, 2020

Dear Friend,

We thank God for His protection and we thank you for your prayers and ongoing support.

COVID-19 is a crisis that is bringing the world to its knees.

Here at the hospital, we continue to work, but there are lockdowns issued by the government, so many patients cannot reach us. They have no transport as many come from hundreds of kilometres away.

Our major concern is that our patients may have serious problems due to a sudden withdrawal of medicine. They cannot come here, and some do not have their treatment details with them (people who have been admitted to our hospital have a discharge summary). Many patients cannot read or write, so telemedicine is not an option, and pharmacies and local healers in rural areas are not reliable.

Chronic illnesses like diabetes, hypertension, Ischemic heart disease, TB, and patients on immunosuppression for leprosy reactions and other chronic illnesses are especially at risk. Their conditions will worsen and there can be life-threatening problems with a sudden withdrawal of medicine. We pray that they will find a reliable doctor locally who can follow instructions in their discharge summaries.

The COVID-19 morbidity and mortality rate in our cities is escalating, but we don’t know the actual numbers. Most patients with neglected tropical diseases just cannot get proper medical help, especially in states like Uttar Pradesh where the government health infrastructure is extremely poor. People are getting frustrated and many doctors have been beaten!!!

We are still "learning" about this disease. We know so little as to how this will evolve and there is so much fear among medical professionals and the general population – probably the world over. We appreciate your continued support and prayers.
