4 Ways to Help on Giving Tuesday

By: effect:hope

On Tuesday, May 5, participate in #GivingTuesdayNow, a global day of unity to give back in response to the unprecedented need caused by COVID-19. Here are 4 ways to spread generosity and show care for people at home and abroad:

Join the global effort to stop COVID-19! We are fortunate to live in Canada where we have access to excellent healthcare. But in the countries where we serve, many do not have clean water to wash their hands! People affected by neglected tropical diseases have compromised immune systems and a spread of COVID-19 will be detrimental to them and to our partners who are caring for them.

That’s why we’re excited to share an opportunity to stop the spread of COVID-19 in vulnerable populations in India through testing. You can help to re-purpose a lab in India and purchase COVID-19 testing machines to save lives. You will ensure people affected by neglected tropical diseases aren’t further neglected.

Yes, I want to help stop the spread of COVID-19!

Donate masks and essentials. Nonsurgical cloth face masks can reduce the spread of COVID-19 by preventing droplets from coming into contact with others or landing on surfaces. There are online sewing patterns for a variety of options and even some non-sew options as well. Other ideas for useful items include scrub caps, non-perishable food items to local shelters, and toilet paper (if you can spare it!) Call your local shelter or hospital to find out if there are any items you can drop off to help people who may be in need.

Find a meaningful way to say “thank you” to frontline workers. Post a “thank you” sign on your window, send pizza to your local fire station, create a chalk tribute on your driveway, write social media posts or handwritten cards expressing thanks to everyone from delivery workers, cashiers, health care workers at seniors’ homes, doctors, nurses, shelter workers, and so on.

Check in on neighbours. The practise of social distancing is necessary for our times, but that doesn’t mean we can’t still reach out through other means. Leave a note for your neighbours with your phone number and email to find out what the needs in your community are. Start a neighbourhood Facebook group to keep in touch. Check out #caremongering and #kindnessiscontagious on Twitter for more awesome ideas. It will put a smile on your face!

COVID-19 won’t last forever. Let’s come through this season of change as better people, full of care and compassion for others.
