Purpose in the Broken Places: Chris’s Story

On August 14, 2014, Chris Channon’s life changed forever. While walking along a quiet beach in Thailand, he was attacked and left for dead. The blow shattered his spine, leaving him an incomplete quadriplegic. Overnight, his world turned upside down. The man who was once active, independent, and adventurous, woke up unable to move — and told he may never walk again.

Finding Purpose Through Pain

That moment of devastation became the start of something extraordinary.

Chris’s journey through pain and recovery revealed a truth that now shapes everything he does: purpose doesn’t disappear in suffering — it transforms through it. “Hope,” he says, “isn’t pretending the pain is gone. It’s knowing God can meet us in the darkest valley and use our brokenness to bring healing to someone else.”

Faith carried him when strength failed. In his lowest moment, he called out to God, and the words that came to him were, ” “I will never leave you nor forsake you.” Those words didn’t erase the pain, but rather reminded him he wasn’t alone in it.

There were many days when Chris wanted to give up. But his family, friends, and strangers became lifelines — whether a therapist that was pushing him one more step or a friend sitting beside him.

For someone who had always helped others, learning to accept help was difficult. Yet over time, Chris discovered that receiving help isn’t a weakness — it’s part of healing.

A Calling Rooted in Compassion

Having lived through the loss of independence, dignity, and identity himself, Chris understands what it’s like to face barriers, need care, and feel forgotten. That’s why the mission of Effect Hope connected so personally with him. His story mirrors the organization’s work — renewing dignity and hope to people too often overlooked, affected by disease, disability, and stigma.

Today, Chris serves Effect Hope as the Engagement & Stewardship Catalyst, channeling his faith and compassion into action. His role is more than a job — it’s a way of giving back. Having once needed rescue, patience, and compassion, he now helps others receive those same gifts.

Connecting with donors is one of the most meaningful parts of his work. “Behind every gift,” he says, “is a heart that wants to help someone else. Donors became part of someone’s rescue story.” He knows this firsthand — when he was lying on that beach, it was a couple from New Zealand who stopped to help until emergency services arrived. That act of kindness changed his life. Now, when Chris speaks with donors, he sees them as part of someone else’s rescue story, just as he was rescued.

Faith That Shapes and Sustains

Chris’s faith has guided every step of his journey, reminding him that his life belongs to God, even when the path is unclear. He has asked “Why, God?” in moments of anger, grief, and pain, but over time those questions became “How, God? How can You use this? How can You shape me? How can You help me encourage someone else?”

That shift has changed how Chris sees people. Professionally, it drives him to treat every person with dignity, to listen well, and to remember that behind every donor, colleague, and person served, there is a story.

His experience in Thailand taught him that life is fragile and compassion is powerful. He still remembers the woman who poured water into his mouth on the beach and the strangers who stayed by his side. Those small acts of kindness became lifelines — reminders that one life matters; one person being seen matters. One act of compassion can ripple far beyond what we’ll ever know.

Every day, Chris carries those lessons forward, believing that faith and compassion can transform even the hardest moments into opportunities for healing.

Hope That Endures

For Chris, hope means no one is forgotten. It’s the quiet assurance that God is still working — even when life looks nothing like we imagined. His message to anyone facing hardship is simple yet profound: “Don’t give up. Your story isn’t over.”

Through his life and work, Chris reminds us that healing multiplies when compassion moves — and that even in broken places, purpose can rise again.
