The situation is grim. You can help.

India now faces the most deadly wave of the pandemic that the world has seen. With 400,000 new cases a day, the health system is overwhelmed. At one of our partner hospitals, there is a 90% positivity rate for COVID-19 among the staff. The situation is grim.

People you support and love are at a higher risk of contracting COVID-19. many live with compromised immune systems. We cannot stand by. Will you join us and save a life?

As a billion people clamour for their jab, people living on the margins will struggle to access the much-needed COVID-19 vaccine. Due to prejudice, the people you support face barriers to receiving the life-saving vaccine. The same people are at high-risk of contracting the virus because of their living situations.

Without your support, people with leprosy, lymphatic filariasis (LF) and related disabilities will be at the back of the line – living in fear of this deadly virus.

You can save lives! Provide the COVID-19 vaccine for a person with leprosy or LF. Through a partnership with Lepra UK and Lepra India, we will provide 2 doses of the vaccine and safe transportation to and from the vaccination site for those affected by leprosy and related disabilities.

Upender's Story

Back in 2013, Upender was a school bus driver. He started experiencing weakness in his left foot. Soon, he was deemed medically unfit to drive the bus and was asked to resign. In other words, he was fired.

Upender was already struggling to provide for his family, when he injured his foot. The cut became an ulcer. It was then that he was diagnosed with leprosy. Soon, his big toe was removed, and he began to experience other complications with his feet and his hands.

But by this time, the COVID-19 pandemic created additional barriers and concerns about visiting a hospital. Despite the worry and fear for the future, he came to our partner at Naini Hospital in India in late December of last year for treatment.

With your help, our partners provided treatment to heal his ulcers and performed surgery to correct his foot drop.

He was also given a COVID-19 vaccination while in care. He said, “If I had been at my house, it would be very difficult to get the vaccination,” he said, "The people in my area don't know much about how to get it and the vaccine center is very far."

Not all those with leprosy in India are fortunate as Upender. We are thankful that he received the life-saving COVID-19 vaccine, but many are waiting. You can help change that. Donate today to save a life.
