For millions in Liberia, healthcare is a distant hope rather than a basic right. The state of the country’s health system is fragile, leaving communities susceptible to treatable conditions. In contrast to the delays and challenges in Canadian healthcare, Liberians face profound barriers: remote clinics, scarce medical staff, limited medications, and deep-rooted cultural stigmas that can isolate those with certain health conditions.
These challenges aren’t just obstacles—they represent a systemic breakdown that undermines human dignity and potential.
The Challenge of Rebuilding Liberia’s Healthcare System
Unfortunately, the 14-year-long civil war had been a harsh reality for the people of Liberia. Effect Hope, in partnership with Liberia’s Ministry of Health has been working hard to rebuild their health system, bringing hope and healing to those in need.
Yet, despite our significant progress in rebuilding their health system, a recent increase in Yaws cases demonstrates the persistent systematic challenges, specifically in Liberia’s most vulnerable and remote regions.
Health Risks of Untreated Yaws: Recent Outbreak
Yaws is a chronic, contagious skin and bone infection that disproportionately affects children aged 15 and under. Recently, there was an outbreak of Yaws in southeastern Liberia, putting over 30,000 people (many of them children) at risk of contracting the disease due to their isolated living conditions.
Although Yaws is both preventable and treatable, the lack of awareness, medical facilities and trained specialists in the region means the disease would lead to disfigurement, disability or chronic pain. If left undiagnosed and untreated, children would continue to suffer, severely impacting their health and quality of life.
Empowered through Your Support
In December, your generous response helped us raise over $61,000 to combat the spread of Yaws in rural Liberia. With an additional $30,000 matching grant from the Anesvad Foundation, we were able to conduct health screenings in 44 remote communities, identifying and providing care for hundreds affected by Yaws.
Our mobile response teams provided treatment on-site and trained local healthcare workers to identify and treat Yaws, helping to prevent future outbreaks. In partnership with Liberia’s Ministry of Health, we educated at-risk communities on prevention, treatment and the stigma surrounding Yaws and similar NTDs.
Partnering for Better Health in Liberia
Since 2012, Effect Hope has partnered with the Liberia Ministry of Health to bring NTD care into the national health system, greatly improving healthcare access for all Liberians.
Through specialized training for public health professionals, strengthening the drug supply chain and improving the health information management system, we are making efforts to expand access to NTD care nationwide.
Global Progress in NTD Prevention: Looking Ahead
Looking forwards, now with a solid foundation for sustainable disease prevention in place, there is hope we can create a Yaws-free future on a global scale. Together, with our partners and supporters we’re empowering communities in Liberia, like we did with Yaws, to detect and treat various NTDs affecting the most vulnerable in rural populations.
