Overview
The IMAGINE Ghana project—short for ‘Integrating Mental Health and Neglected Tropical Disease Interventions to Support Equitable People-Centred Care’—is a 3-year initiative starting in January 2025. It aims to improve healthcare for people affected by both mental health conditions and neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) in Ghana.
Challenge
Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) like leprosy and lymphatic filariasis cause not only physical pain and disability but also lead to stigma, discrimination, and mental health challenges such as depression and anxiety. In Ghana and other low- and middle-income countries, people affected by NTDs often struggle to get the mental health support they need. Health systems tend to treat physical symptoms but overlook the emotional and social impacts. There is also a lack of resources and expertise to implement holistic care models that address both physical and mental health needs.
Solution
The IMAGINE Ghana project will develop and test a Ghana-specific version of the World Health Organization’s Essential Care Package (ECP) for mental health and stigma related to NTDs. This package will be adapted to local needs and implemented in four districts across three regions in Ghana. The project will use participatory action research, meaning people affected by NTDs will help design and carry out the study. It will also involve health workers, researchers, and policymakers to ensure the solutions are practical and sustainable.
