Challenge
Leprosy still carries an enormous stigma in India. Even hospitals refuse care to people with leprosy—especially those with visible disabilities or limited finances.
With 60% of the world’s new leprosy cases in India, people often suffer alone, untreated, and unable to work or live with dignity.
Solution
Naini Hospital is a compassion-driven institution that never turns anyone away. Since 1876, it has offered specialized inpatient care, surgery, therapy, and social integration services for patients with leprosy and related disabilities.
Outcomes
- Treated 9,953 patients with leprosy complications
- Performed 135 reconstructive surgeries
- Provided 1,385 pairs of protective footwear
- Delivered physiotherapy to 872 people
- Trained 56 healthcare providers
- Helped patients return to their communities with dignity
Chandu’s Story
At just 11, Chandu developed leprosy-related ulcers. She was late getting help and developed a deformity—but after receiving care at Naini, she was inspired to become a nurse. Despite being stigmatized during training, she persevered. Fast forward to today, she helps up to 40 patients a day at the hospital that gave her back her life.
