Challenge
Liberia has endured decades of conflict, leaving its health system fractured. Of 293 health facilities pre-war, only 51 remained functional by 2003. Though progress has been made, neglected tropical diseases — like leprosy, lymphatic filariasis, and other disabling illnesses—still impact thousands of people, especially in poor and rural areas.
The result? People bounce from clinic to clinic, often receiving late or incorrect treatment. Stigma, lack of trained staff, and broken supply chains create deep barriers to care.
Solution
The TRANSFORM solution builds an NTD response within the public health system—not around it. We’re not just delivering treatment—we’re building a better system that works for everyone, everywhere in Liberia.
Actionables
- Training every level of the health workforce to recognize and treat NTDs—starting with 5 pilot counties and expanding nationwide
- Fixing the supply chain to ensure medicines and diagnostics arrive where and when they’re needed
- Improving data systems to track cases, guide decisions, and strengthen accountability
- Embedding NTD care into medical school curriculums, national plans, and community structures
- Engaging affected communities to reduce stigma and make sure care is truly people-centered
- Elevating local voices by ensuring affected individuals help shape and evaluate the program
