A Global Model to Transform How We Support People Affected by Leprosy

Challenge

Community-Based Groups (CBGs) are a powerful way to support people affected by leprosy and other skin-related NTDs. Yet approaches vary widely, and mental health support is often missing. Additionally, there is limited evidence on what makes these groups most effective, sustainable, and scalable.

Solution

UPLIFT brought together partners in India, Bangladesh, and Ethiopia to develop, test, and refine a harmonized CBG model. Building on proven self-care practices, the model integrates psychosocial support, peer leadership and community engagement.

The result is a practical framework designed to improve physical health, mental well-being, social inclusion, and long-term sustainability for people affected by leprosy and other skin NTDs.

A stronger understanding of how self-care and psychosocial support improve well-being for people affected by skin-related NTDs.
Practical tools to help organizations implement and strengthen CBGs.

Goals

To equip organizations, governments, and communities with a proven, people-centred model that empowers people affected by NTDs to support one another, improve their well-being, reduce stigma, and build more inclusive futures.
