The lush green fields of Côte d’Ivoire mask rampant poverty and despair. As you move from the coastal regions of this West African nation, you see a marked difference in opportunity.

After years of political uncertainty and violence, many have left the country in search of safer, more stable positions. There are simply not enough trained professionals to treat everyone.

Poverty and a lack of healthcare services leave children vulnerable to ringworm, hookworm and whipworm. The government manages deworming treatments for children in school as it is cost-effective, but preschool children under the age of 5 are ignored and missed.

Yet, it is critical that pre-school children are treated. If not, they are susceptible to infection that can stunt their growth, lead to blindness and even death. effect:hope, in collaboration with Global Affairs Canada, provides combined deworming treatment and Vitamin A supplementation to children under 5 years living in six health regions in Cote d’Ivoire. effect:hope’s program trains healthcare workers to provide deworming treatment and Vitamin A supplementation to preschool children at their houses or community centres (markets, churches, mosques, etc) , giving them their best chance of being healthy when they're ready to go to school.

This targets all girls and boys under 5 years to ensure all children, including those with disability, receive this critical treatment. Both mothers and fathers are encouraged to get involved in their children’s health and share the responsibility of making sure their sons and daughters get the treatment every 6 months.
